Team Vic Clubs
& Activities

VUWSA places a great importance on our students enjoying their time at Vic. Team Vic is VUWSA’s brand with an aim of facilitating sporting and social activity through such things as clubs, uni games, and orientation (Can you please link these to the relevant info pages?) Have a look around this site to see what is being offered and find out how you can get involved.

Social Activities

Studying at VIC shouldn’t just be about sleeping through lectures and hopefully passing your exams. You also need to gain the “Full University Experience” so that you have a few good stories to tell when you graduate. That’s why the VUWSA Activities Monkey exists. To arrange and facilitate your good times. Wellington is undoubtedly the music and entertainment capital of NZ. Everything is within walking distance and you don’t have to go far to find things to do. Just keep a regular eye on this site for instance. We have regular giveaways, shows, ticket discounts for students, things to do and maybe some things not to do.

Orientation and re orientation

The Orientation Festival is held in the first week of trimester one and is the event to kick start a great year at university. There should be something for everyone. Music, sports, trivia, clubs galore, street performers and of course the Hang Over Hangi. The highlights are the live performances. Recently these have included bands such as
the Black Seeds, Katchafire, Kora, Supergroove, Salmonella Dub, Shihad, The Datsuns, NOFX, Pennywise, and Juliette Lewis and the Licks just to name a few. This is the time of year to meet new people and try some new things. If you’re new to Wellington then make sure you see some of the music and sights on offer. Re orientation is a similar event held during the first week of trimester two.

Sports Events and Awards

There are a number of sporting events offered. These come in the form of competitive as well as social sports. The major events for the year include:

To honour the high achieving vic students VUWSA hosts the annual Victoria University Blues Awards. Blues are the highest recognition the university can give to students who have, by their sporting achievements, brought credit to the institution. Blues have been around for a long time, dating from the British universities. The Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association first initiated the ceremony in 1965 and has since seen athletes such as All Blacks Graham Mourie, Jerry Collins, and Conrad Smith, World Mountain Running Champ KateMcIlroy, and NZ Black Stick captain Suzie Pearce all honoured with this distinction. Blues can be awarded in any sport. They are awarded by the Students’ Association (VUWSA), on recommendation of the Blues Panel. Blues criteria and application forms can be downloaded from the Resources page.

Clubs

Clubs day 08 is just around the corner. More information and participation details.

VUWSA cultural and sports clubs offer students a way to meet new people with similar interests as well as a chance to try new experiences. VUWSA affiliated clubs play a crucial role in campus life as they run many events on campus throughout the year. Clubs are managed by their respective executive committees. The positions on the committee give students the opportunity to gain some practical experience in leadership, event management, marketing, promotion, communication, and administration..

VUWSA supports clubs in a number of ways from:

  • providing grants
  • club promotion
  • fundraising opportunities
  • supplying office resources and assistance
  • presenting achievement awards
  • making meeting rooms available
  • supplying cheap rental vehicles
  • BBQ hire

VUWSA also employs a full-time Clubs Development Officer (CDO) to provide advice and support.

There are a number of existing clubs on campus. Check out the sports or cultural clubs list for the latest club details. If you want to start your own club the CDO is here to help you but make sure you read the step-by-step guide before making an appointment. You will also find the Clubs Handbook a valuable resource. Pick up the latest paper copy from the VUWSA Reception. New clubs can start up at any time throughout the year.

Downloadable Forms for Clubs

VUWSA Clubs can download a model constitution, an affiliation and grant application form and other documents from the Resources page. Or pick up from the VUWSA Reception. The Clubs Handbook is a great resource providing all the information necessary for clubs and their members.
