The VUW Boxing Club has amalgamated with Gloves Boxing Gym at 28-30 Hopper Street (Above Yan's Supermarket) in Mt Cook. There’s a full timetable and description of the classes available on

How much does it cost?

Charges for VUW students for 2010 are: $150 per semester (start in Feb or June), or $250 for the year (which runs from February to October). You can also pay a casual rate of $8 per session or join Gloves Gym for the VUW student rate of $10 per week. You will also need to purchase hand wraps (available from the club for $15 a pair). If you start sparring you will also need a mouth guard (available from chemists and sports stores for around $5-$10).

Do you cater for all levels?

We cater for males and females and can teach beginners or take on experienced boxers.

How do I register?

We recommend you try us out for a session (you get one for free) then approach the coach for a membership form. We have gear to loan people who are trying things out - you should just wear normal workout gear (shorts, t-shirt and trainers) and bring a towel and a water bottle.

Will I get hit in the face?

Most of our training is done on the pads and bags, though once you have the basics under your belt you can move on to using sparring gloves and doing sparring related exercises.

Do you support people who want to compete?

Yes. We train people for competition and have entered people in local tournaments. We are registered to put people into the ring and the senior coach holds a licence that allows her to support competitive boxers from the corner. Boxers for competition are selected by the coach on the basis of skill, experience, readiness for competition and regularity at training - competing is not an automatic right.

Do you support fitness boxers?

There is no problem with people coming for fitness. The majority of the Gloves classes are designed with fitness boxers in mind. The two 6.30 classes (Tuesday and Thursday) are for those wanting to learn sparring skills. Entry to those classes is at the coach’s discretion. The drills we use in those classes are focused on exercises and skills which prepare people for fighting.
