Clubs Day 08

July 9, 2008
10:00 amto5:00 pm

Clubs Day 08 will be held in the Kelburn quad from 11am to 2pm on Wednesday July 9th.

Sports and cultural clubs will be hosting stalls in the quad. Come check out what’s available to you here at the Vic Uni campus. There will be plenty of info and maybe a bribe or two so is well work getting to.

There is a massive variety of clubs to choose from. There are a number of major sports clubs on campus including rugby, football, netball, hockey, and cricket. However there are also a number of martial arts clubs and some not so well known sports clubs including handball, ultimate frisbee, korfball, and floorball.

There is an even bigger range of cultural clubs on campus. These clubs range from social to political clubs, language to science clubs, arts to cooking clubs.

Whether you’re a serious or casual sports person, looking to up your social network, or are passionate about anything there’s something here for you.

If for the odd reason the clubs on campus aren’t catering your specific needs, you can start your own club. All you need is a little ambition and 20 student members and you’re underway. If you have any ideas or want to know anything at all Contact the Victoria University Student’s Association’s Clubs Development Officer Brent Hayward on 463 5060 or email clubs@vuwsa.org.nz.

For a list of clubs and there contact details view our cultural clubs or sports clubs pages.

Information on participating in clubs day:

The Combined Clubs Day will be held in the Kelburn Quad on Wednesday July 9th. Setup will commence at 10am and we hope to have everyone up and running by 11. This day is a great opportunity to promote your club to the thousands of students passing through. There will be more than 50 clubs competing for student attention so try and be imaginative with your stall to draw students to you. VUWSA will be providing tables and chairs for each club. There is also the opportunity for some clubs to have access to power and have a tv and/or dvd player provided for you. VUWSA will also be operating a BBQ on the day so unfortunately there is not the opportunity for clubs to operate their own BBQ.

In addition, there are restrictions regarding the provision of hot foods, drinks, food making/coffee/candyfloss machines etc. Basically if it is seen as a health and safety issue by the Student Union it will not be allowed. Please notify me of your request and I will let you know if it is possible.

Below is the information required from you to gain your club access to the event. Please complete and email back to me by no later than 5pm Tuesday July 1st. You will be advised of your stall placement prior to the day.

A reminder that GIVE IT A GO WEEK will be held from Monday July 14th to Sunday July 20th. This is the second week of trimester 2 and is the week after clubs days. It is for both sports and cultural clubs.

The idea of GIVE IT A GO WEEK is to enable potential club members with an opportunity to get first hand experience of your club’s activities. It is thought to compliment your club promotion during clubs days. If you are looking at increasing your membership or attracting skilled sports people from another code then we recommend you get behind this opportunity. An additional bonus is that both the Cultural and Sports Council looks favourably upon clubs who are active within the university community.

VUWSA in partnership with the VUW Rec Centre will be primarily responsible for the promotion of the week including an outline in the clubs newsletter, an article in salient, as well as on posters, flyers, and the VUWSA website. A timetable will be developed for 1 hour timeslots throughout the week outlining what is happening, who is hosting, where it is, and what to bring. We will also be running BBQ’s to encourage participation and there will be a huge prize pack to be won by one lucky student.

We need your help to make the week a success. What we would like clubs to do is organise a 1-2 hour session aimed at inducting new members. The session may include games, discussion, food, videos, a guest speaker, and/or prizes. It is completely up to you. You may even want to use as a club fundraiser. For a session to work you would need to encourage club members to volunteer their time. This may be to referee a game, partake in a game, speak to students, organise club info to be distributed etc. It completely depends on what your session will entail. It may be an idea to use this session as an additional free training timeslot for your members as long as you can include other potential members in your session.

The Rec Centre has made space available including the Main gym, Long room and the Boyd-Wilson Arena from 12-3pm Wednesday 16th, Thursday 17th, and Friday 18th of July. There will be no charge to book a timeslot. You may even apply for a second timeslot on another day however this will pend available slots. Please make your bookings with me directly. Meeting room space in the Student Union Building needs to be booked as per usual. The Rec Centre and SU Building are only two options you have the ability to organise sessions wherever you want.

To book a timeslot on the official calendar please confirm your session with me by no later than Tuesday July 1st.

I will be the contact person for GIVE IT A GO WEEK so let me know your thoughts and whether I can help in anyway.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Cheers,

Brent
