The Victoria University Blues Awards

Blues are the highest recognition the University can give to people who have brought credit to the University via their sporting achievements.

Blues have been around for a long time, dating from the British universities. The very first Victoria Blue was awarded in 1903. Since then athletes such as the likes of the All Blacks’ Graham Mourie, Jerry Collins and Conrad Smith, along with World Mountain Running Champ Kate McIlroy and NZ Black Stick captain Suzie Pearce have been honored with the Blues distinction. Blues can be awarded in any sport.  They are awarded by VUWSA, on recommendation of the Victoria University Blues Panel.

The premier awards include the:

  • Sportsperson of the Year
  • Maori Sportsperson of the Year,
  • Sports Administrator of the Year.

If you have gained regional representative honors or higher you may be eligible for a sports award. If you have been successful in sports administration you may be eligible for an administration blue. The Blues standards and nomination forms are available from VUWSA or can be downloaded here:

Applications for 2009 must be received no later than 4p.m., Friday 11 September 2009.

The award ceremony itself is a grand occasion held in a formal setting with a 3 course gourmet menu provided. The ceremony attracts not only award recipients and their guests but also delegates from the local government, sporting institutions and other relevant industries. The ceremony is ordinarily held in early October.
