Day of Silence

UniQ is excited to announce the first Day of Silence at VUW!

The Day of Silence is an international youth movement bringing attention to the homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying, name-calling and harassment faced by students in our communities.

By taking a vow of silence for the 9th of September, participants (including allies) echo the silencing of LGBTQIA+ people by these behaviours in a show of solidarity that seeks to start a critical conversation about the wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ people in schools and universities.

At 12:30 in the Hub, a UniQ representative will deliver a speech about the importance of the Day of Silence, followed by a group scream to symbolically break that silence.

How to participate:

• If you want to take a vow of silence, we encourage you to download the Selfie for Silence sheet from the Day of Silence website (linked below), fill it out, take a selfie with it, and upload the results to your chosen social media account(s) with the hashtag #dayofsilencevuw

• On the day, print a card from the website or create your own so people understand why you’ve chosen to be silent.

• To respect vows of silence: If you choose not to be silent, we encourage you to learn more about Day of Silence and the homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia that it draws attention to from dayofsilence.org.nz, as well as through the UniQ Victoria and VUWSA Facebook pages.

• Victoria staff respecting vow of silence: We’ve encouraged VUW staff to learn about Day of Silence, and to respect students’ vow of silence both in class and on campus more generally.

Being silent or respecting the silence of others on this day is an important step towards building awareness and committing to addressing these injustices. We cordially invite you to participate in any capacity.
