Students say NO! to fee rises
Students across all fields of study, law, commerce, humanities, science and others have stood up and voiced their disapproval of the recently passed fees hike, in the recently completed Stop Lecture Meeting held at Victoria University.
“This is about finding student mandate and the student mandate is decisively against the annual university fee rises” says VUWSA Education Vice-President Joel Cosgrove on the results of the SLM.
Almost 2000 students led by their class representative in more than 40 classes across campus debated the motion “That Vic students oppose a domestic fee rise” over a two week period. With 1800 affirming the motion, 47 disagreeing and 79 abstaining.
“This overwhelming result opposing the now regular 5% fee increases, shows that students are angry with the current funding system.”
At a number of meetings, motions were spontaneously passed in support of Universal Student Allowances, highlighting the many other funding issues also facing the under funded tertiary sector.
