Education Action Group
The Education Action Group (EAG) runs VUWSA’s education campaigns. The EAG organises education-focused protests, forums and other activities at Victoria. It is funded by VUWSA to campaign on education issues in line with VUWSA policy. At the same time, the EAG is an independent group controlled by the students who take part in it. Students are encouraged to bring any grievances to EAG meetings you may have relating to your education.
The EAG has assisted VUWSA in a range of education related campaigns. In 1995 the EAG, often the main organ of fee setting protest, staged a sit-in during a meeting of the University Council as they attempted to raise domestic fees for 1996, forcing the meeting to disband. In 1997 a student demonstration in opposition to user-pays education was met by police barricades before it reached parliament after members of the EAG threw flyers opposing government education policy into the debating chamber.
In 2009, the EAG is assisting VUWSA in its ‘Cut Back? Fight Back!’ campaign in opposition to University budget cuts. After assisting students in boycotting a class earlier in the year, the EAG is now mobilising to oppose fee increases and to highlight the continued Government under funding of the tertiary sector.
