General Meetings

VUWSA holds general meetings where students can change the Constitution, and alter or set formal VUWSA policy on just about anything.

The Initial General Meeting (IGM) is held at the beginning of the year (usually in March).

The other main general meeting is the Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is held towards the end of the year, often around September.

Students are also able to call Special General Meetings (SGM), which must be for one specific issue. These can be called by a petition of 10 students presented to the VUWSA President or one of the Vice-Presidents; a SGM can also be called by the VUWSA Executive. A simple majority can make most decisions at general meetings, unless it’s a constitutional change, rolling an Executive member or making someone a life member. A motion needs a 2/3 majority to pass in these instances. SGM’s need 100 students in attendance to gain quorum (i.e. for the meeting to take place).

VUWSA has an obligation to notify students of an upcoming general meeting, so check the VUWSA notice board (outside VUWSA’s Kelburn Offices) or Salient for the date of the next IGM, AGM, or SGM.
