The VBC 88.3FM – Student Radio

The VBC 88.3FM

The VBC 88.3FM is Victoria’s very own student and community radio station.  The Veeb, as it is fondly known, broadcasts on 88.3FM in central Wellington and streams live on the Internet.

The VBC is proudly owned and operated by students. With a non-commercial, freeform radio ethic the VBC 88.3FM provides students and the wider Wellington community with content not often found elsewhere.

Established in 2007, the VBC 88.3FM offers a free and open medium of communication, aiming to be inclusive and informative while maintaining objectivity and independence.  Its non-commercial bent sees a programme range which includes nearly anything and everything: providing that stands for quality. Catering to a wide range of tastes and interests, the VBC 88.3FM profiles regular interviews, live-to-airs and showcase demos from up-and-coming bands and musicians.

Serving as a platform for those with creative initiative and a passion for their interests – be it news, hosting, playing gigs, writing rants, selling ice to the Eskimos – come to the Veeb and give it a bash!

The story so far

The VBC 88.3FM’s humble beginnings started when a group of people decided to establish a radio station on campus after the demise of the then student station Radio Active in the 1990s. Broadcasting began during Orientation 2007, and the VBC 88.3FM has been looking out for your community-conscious ass ever since.

The VBC 88.3FM has worked tirelessly to cement itself as the broadcaster of choice for Victoria students and now broadcast 24-hours a day, seven days a week, with between 12-15 hours of ‘live’ progammes a day.

As part of the commitment to providing innovative and varying content, the VBC 88.3FM  makes it a priority to keep the Wellington community informed by doing the hard yards so listeners don’t have to.

As a non-profit radio station the VBC 88.3FM can provide content not often found on other radio stations, including documentaries, demos from up and coming bands and musicians, interviews, live performances and heaps more.

What the VBC can do for you (and what you can do for the VBC)

The VBC 88.3FM provides all VUWSA affiliated clubs and Representative Groups the opportunity to promote up and coming events that are relevant both to students, and the wider community. In turn the VBC 88.3FM also provides discounted or free advertising to student and charitable organisations, as well as radio sponsorship of their events.

The VBC 88.3FM offers free and practical training for students at Victoria who wish to gain experience in all areas of radio broadcasting, including journalism, advertising and marketing. Student volunteers are given the opportunity to host shows, develop their news and research skills, organise events, gather sponsorship, and pick up expertise in other areas such as copywriting and technical engineering.

The VBC 88.3FM’s daily news service provides information that is both interesting and relevant to students, while also covering student-related news and campus events. Overall, the VBC 88.3FM maintains a neutral stance, which is open to all opinions and beliefs.

It also connects the campus with the wider Wellington community. This includes hosting the popular weekly VBC Presents… Wednesday nights at the San Francisco Bathhouse, sponsoring both local and major international gigs, organising Orientation and ongoing events in conjunction with VUWSA, publishing the Bandwagon weekly gig guide, and supporting events held by other student Representative Groups.

In 2009 the VBC 88.3FM began the implementation of their online media service. Currently it includes live Internet streaming and a growing podcast service. This will develop further within the coming months as the VBC 88.3FM aims to offer students, some of whom are not be able to pick up our transmission, the opportunity to listen and connect with via other means. Cool!
