Plunket Medal 2017

New Zealand's oldest and most prestigious oratory competition is back for 2017! Starting in 1906, the Plunket Medal has been awarded to the Victoria University student who delivers the most moving and rhetorically powerful speech to an audience and judges. Past winners of the competition have been some of New Zealand's top lawyers, politicians, and artists.

The competition will consist of giving a 10 – 12 minute speech on any topic you choose. You can bring a one-sided cue card with you to help with your speech (although if you can go off of memory entirely, even better!). You can’t bring a timer up with you, though your judges will let you know when you’ve reached ten minutes.

The winner will receive the Plunket Medal, a cash prize of $100, their name on the Hunter Building’s honours board, and a warm fuzzy feeling of personal accomplishment.

To enter the competition and secure your place in Victoria’s history, e-mail contact@vicdebsoc.org.nz with your name and your speech’s topic!

Satisfied Customers

Book tickets! https://bats.co.nz/whats-on/satisfied-customers/
Where: BATS Theatre, 1 Kent Terrace

Meet SATISFIED CUSTOMERS, a Wellington based band whose musical skill sit firmly below average.

We have a drummer who can't drum (Ingrid Saker), a bassist who can only play the violin (Adeline Shaddick), a lead guitarist stuck in NCEA success stories (Ben Ashby) and a pianoist who actually knows something about music (Isaac Thomas), The Satisfied Customers are on their way to nowhere.

A passionate parent offers the band an opportunity: write a jingle for a new, unreleased advert and make the big time. The only problem is the Satisfied Customers have no idea what the advert is about.

Fuelled by a drive for fame and glory the band comes up with a scheme; write a jingle that could sell anything… ever. And so begins the ultimate quest for fulfilment and the ultimate test of creative integrity.

How far do people let their moral compass stretch for self-gain or self-preservation?

Written by Ben Wilson
Directed by Keegan Bragg

Performed by Ben Ashby, Ingrid Saker, Adeline Shaddick, Matthew Staijen-Leach and Isaac Thomas.

Vic Folk : Ceilidh (part of the Weekend Tunefest)

All dances will be called, no experience or partner required.

There will be a session at the venue after the dancing.

Vic Folk has a ceilidh band with a flexible lineup that has been putting on ceilidhs in 2017. The aim of the band is both to provide lively dance tunes, mostly in the Irish and Scottish traditions, for the dancers and to offer an accessible way for musicians to gain experience in playing for dance.

To this end, Vic Folk runs regular practices, and will be hosting a workshop during the Tune Fest to give interested musicians a chance to learn some tunes and join in with the main band lineup.

On this occasion we’re lucky to be joined by a guest caller, Caoimhe McKearney from County Tyrone, Ireland. Caoimhe has led the Cambridge University ceilidh band and has years of experience on the professional ceilidh circuit in London. We’re delighted to have her here to get the party going on Saturday!

Start Time: 7pm

Event Location: Aro Valley Community Centre

Exhibition: Out of Site...

In the wake of a storeroom upgrade, seismic activity, and the closure of Victoria’s Karori Campus, over half of Victoria University of Wellington’s Art Collection was relocated last year. While the logistics of coordinating the movement of hundreds of fragile objects was significant, their disruption gave the Adam Art Gallery, the Collection’s custodian, cause to reflect on the relation of art works to their context.

Out of Site – Works from the Victoria University of Wellington Art Collection is the outcome of this exercise. The exhibition draws out stories that link key works to their environs through historical association, photographic documentation, and by site-specific intention. This is a unique opportunity for our audiences to view works seldom seen together and to find out more about the cultural narratives they embody.

Where: Adam Art Gallery Te Pataka Toi, beside the Student Union Building

When: 18 February - 23 April 2017

Opening hours: Sunday - Tuesday, 11am - 5pm

FREE entry
