Current Submission: Traffic Changes on the Golden Mile

The current consultation on the Golden Mile is about traffic resolutions. Let’s Get Wellington Moving is wanting to change what vehicles get to drive on the roads along the Golden Mile and reallocate space to better suit the needs of Wellingtonians. The aim is to reduce cars, increase pedestrian safety, accessibility and make our city a better place for people to use. The revitalisation of the Golden Mile aims to revive the cultural, retail and social experience of the CBD and transition towards a low emissions future.

What is the Golden Mile?

The Golden Mile is the stretch of road from the Parliament end of Lambton Quay, by Bowen Street, along Lambton Quay to Willis Street, then along Manners Street until the end of Courtney Place.

What are some of the main changes?

Buses and emergency services will be able to drive on the Golden Mile, but for other vehicles there are new restrictions. Private vehicles must be authorised to drive along the Golden Mile, or are only allowed to drive from 9pm – 7pm in the evenings on Courtney Place.

The Golden Mile plan seeks to widen the streets and have more bike lanes, bigger footpaths, more plants, seating and shared spaces. It also seeks to create special vehicle lanes which are just for buses, to make bus transit faster and more reliable.

How does this affect me?

If you regularly walk, cycle or bus through, to or around the CBD, the Golden Mile should make transport easier for you. It should also make the CBD greener, safer and more spacious. If you regularly drive to or through the CBD, you will need to park your vehicle in a side street or parking garage, as opposed to on the Golden Mile.

How do I submit?

You can submit on the Let’s Get Wellington Moving Website.

There are options for a short submission or a more detailed submission. If you are exceptionally passionate, you can also speak directly in person to the people responsible for the plan, just make sure to indicate your desire to speak at the end of the survey!
