Representation
Representation
One of VUWSA’s core services is the coordination of student representation at Victoria. This service aims to ensure that students have a voice in the decisions that affect them.
VUWSA seeks to achieve this in a number of ways. Firstly, the VUWSA Executive is a democratically elected body of students, who are voted in by students. The VUWSA Executive governs the Association, and represents students’ interests both locally and nationally as members of the New Zealand Union of Students’ Associations (NZUSA).
Locally, within the University, various members of the VUWSA Executive sit on boards and committees to represent students. For example, the President sits on the University Council, as well as on the Academic Board (along with the Vice-President (Education). The Vice-President (Welfare) sits on the Hardship Committee.
Another way in which VUWSA ensures student representation is through the election of over 900 Faculty Delegates and Class Representatives. Faculty Delegates are elected each year at VUWSA’s Initial General Meeting (IGM). Class Representatives are elected at the commencement of every course, and are trained and coordinated by the VUWSA Education Team, which is headed by the Vice-President (Education).
VUWSA also recognises a number of Representative Organisations that are dedicated to specific groups of students. They range from education based groups such as the Law Students’ Society and STUDiO, to welfare orientated groups such as UniQ and the Women’s Group.
